Summer Songs

September 23, 2019

The transition to Summer seems to happen overnight. One moment the windows are firmly shut against the chill, the next they're wide open to allow the warm breeze to filter through rooms where air hangs heavy with heat.

We were fortunate to visit the Kruger Park for Baroque in the Bush at Shingwedzi and managed to squeeze 8 extra days around the  time we were there. We saw the 'Big 7' which is the Big 5 + Cheetah and Wild dog. This added to the marvellous sightings of elephant and buffalo and a very special sighting of leopard. In fact, we had such good game viewing we were reluctant to share our good fortune with friends.

Baroque in the Bush had us 'Ba-rocking' at the concerts with great music and special guests the Tim Kliphuis Trio, who interpreted Vivaldi in various and surprising ways. The accommodation we had at Shingwedzi was most acceptable and meeting friends and connecting with old (school) friends was the added bonus. We've put our names down for 2020 and hopefully we will be able to work around Jewish holidays to be able to attend.

We're almost at the end of our Round Robin swap with the Friends with Threads group and what a great (and fairly easy) time we've had. There will be a 'Rex the Rhino' event in November and we look forward to that.

John Moore will be holding an exhibition in Illovo with various events around that and I look forward to some interaction with the organisers of Rex the Rhino Foundation and the artist.

Monday is the start of a new calligraphy class requested by a few people and I find this an exciting way to end the year. One 'new' student is actually a past student which is delightful. While I was in the Baroque I met some past students as well as people who had in turn been taught by one of my students which was most heartening. Calligraphy isn't just an ancient craft, it fits easily into our modern world where we need to set aside time to reflect and create. The Wednesday evening ladies and Thursday morning group who are about to end this year's set project (a coffee table book filled with calligraphy) are working hard to complete all the works suggested.

Until next time, keep off the mobile, read in the garden, enjoy the balmy weather.
