Exhibitions & Winter Tales
David and I and a friend, Sam, attended the Kingsmead Literary Fair (a precursor to the Franschoek Literary Fair) spent a delightful few hours in lectures, sitting outside sharing meals and absorbing the atmosphere. Apart from the fact Johnathan Janssen was ill and unable to attend his lecture and the Gautrain parking was R100.00 we really did have a good time. We had such a good time we are thinking of re-visiting the FLF in 2019.
John has an exhibition at In ToTo Gallery in Birdhaven until 14 June. While the gallery seems a little inaccessible, the penthouse space is open and lends itself to large images. Some of the works include nudes which is a different approach from John's normal works, but it has been an interesting journey and the exhibition has been a great success.
Another successful evening class of Uncial is about to end. It seems that short concise classes are in demand especially for people who work. The homework is minimal and reward great. I will continue to offer short courses through the year. Thursday classes continue with regularity and challenges to creativity are set every week. At the moment Asemic writing (the new Buzz Word) in calligraphy seems to be the way to go. It used to be called gestural or interpretive calligraphy - but Asemic it is at the moment. Some calligraphers find it difficult to simply 'write indiscriminately with seeming little planning'. But of course, planning and placing strokes is of utmost importance. Here are a few examples of the Thursday morning group work.
And if you think that Asemic work is only for adults here are a few images of my grandson creating his own works. Interestingly, I watched as he chose his colours precisely and dipped his brush in each well and then 'swept' the paint over the paper. No anguish at all. A good lesson for the adult in us.
Our Friends with Threads outreach projects continue to expand and we continue to every other Monday and enjoy our chats and working together for a common cause. Our piles of blankets, beanies and baby jerseys are growing ready for the winter chill.
Remember, the days are getting colder so keep a warm heart.
Take care till next time.
