March - Friendship & Memories

We have had a busy and lovely year so far. A trip to the Kalagadi, down to Rose Cottage, planning another trip to Rose Cottage (still hoping for rain) and a whole re-vamp of the studio and our garden (which is very exciting) and that is only up to the beginning of April. Now we are looking forward to the Easter break.

And then of course we have our charity Mondays and on it goes. We are still working on blankets for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela day. We also create lovely beanies and bootees for Bara babies which we give to our contact at Bara when we think we have enough to make a difference.

We had some sadness at the beginning of the year when our beloved cat Roxanne left us for the great mouse chase in the sky. This dearest companion waited until we returned from the north-west Cape and after much heart-ache and soul-searching left us on a Thursday afternoon. I miss her 'cat-stares', loud purrs and constant loving companionship she gave us all.

Dear Roxanne

The studio has been busy with students creating some beautiful calligraphy and colourful postcards and letters. The theme this year is the Graceful Art of Letter Writing which is especially unusual in the age of instant everything. At the moment we are making postcards inspired by my friend Lin Kerr. We are having great fun sharing ideas and paints. As a group, we have become interested in Postcrossing which is an exciting group which shares postcards around the world. Do check the website: It really is fascinating.

I'm loving the crochet and knitting creative work. Another way to combine colours, designs and friendship.

At the moment I am completely in love with the Scheepjes cotton yarn. From the Netherlands, this cotton works up beautifully, giving texture and colour. At the moment I am making a blanket using about 5 pale colours in the Stonewashed range. The new design arrives each Sunday and it is really easy (and fun).

As always I am working on a few projects: A scarf using Electric Carnation silk/wool mix for a dear friend, a baby blanket for a special baby-on-the-way and various small projects that have been hanging around for a while. There are too many wonderful websites with patterns and ideas but there are two I return to often: Lucy is creative and fun and you will enjoy her designs. The other one I love is Dedri is an enthusiastic designer who overflows with ideas.

At the end of March there is a special CAL (crochet-a-long) created by the Scheepjes community celebrating the life of a young woman 'Winks'. Called Last Dance on the Beach it will include some of Marinke Slump's designs. More about her can be found on: You will find her poignant story and some beautiful ideas.

As I look over the garden the trees are dripping with rain and our new garden is smiling. After the shock of having some (small trees) removed and others severely pruned, I think my mum and dad would have approved of our new look. We certainly do. Not too formal and with the pinoaks still spreading over the flower beds filled with green shade plants and roses in the sunny spot that we have, I have high hopes for an exquisite display by December.

Wishing you all a wonderful Purim filled with fun and laughter and a basket filled with chocolate over Easter.

Keep busy and remember to take some deep relaxing breaths inbetween the business of our lives.

Till next time.
